The hike back is uphill in the heat - again, not a difficult uphill walk, but the heat makes it harder. ![]() Lots of boats park nearby to allow tour groups to snorkel. The monument itself is nothing special to see. Then once you descend to the water it's beautiful and the snorkeling is excellent. It's not very scenic until you pop out above the coastline. If you don't enjoy humidity and heat, this hike is not great. It's not a physically hard hike, but it is really HOT in places where there is no shade. The hike is 1.8 miles each way, with 1300 foot change in elevation on a dirt/lava rock path. We hiked down the Captain Cook trail to the monument for snorkeling with our local friend. Just beware that if you read anywhere that this is a moderate hike you may find it more difficult. The views were beautiful and while we were completely exhausted after, we felt a sense of accomplishment. I found hiking uphill much easier as I was not afraid of falling or slipping. Our 4.5 enjoyed the hike down, but not the hike back up. When we got to the bottom we were too worried about making it back to the top to enjoy the area. The second half of the first bit is more open, gets more steep and has loose rocks under foot….difficult and scary to go down with a baby in the carrier. Long pants and sleeves would be helpful as I got quite cut up by the plants. The first half of the downhill part is through thick sugar cane plants. We thought since it was described as “moderate” it’d be fine with the kids. We have a ten month old and 4.5 year old at the time. We read that this was a moderate two mile hike out to the monumental and then two miles back for a total four mile hike. Including 2 hours of snorkeling, it was 5 hour long trip. The rocks are small hence making it slippery.įamily of 4 consumed 7 bottles of water and 3 cans of soda in a round trip under partly cloudy day. 1.3 miles is full of grass on muddy trail. It took 70 mins to hike down, and 100 mins to hike up. If determined, one can hike with aqua shoes, but it is more difficult on the muddy part of the trail. Hiking shoes are not a must, but highly recommended. Hat is highly recommended, because the grass is tall and will attack head and neck. Without this, the grass will constantly cut the legs and arms skin. Some part of the path looks unpassable due to the grass. ![]() About 1.3 miles out of 2 miles tail (one way), the grass will cut legs and arms constantly. Grasses cover already narrow path, and it appears the path is not maintained at all. (I visited there when it rains everyday). Is full of tall and wide grasses and the path is very muddy. Pictures associated with Google map is no longer applicable. But one can legally park on unpaved part of the road. There is neither a sign post nor a marker. Search for “Captain Cook Monument Trail” in Google map. This is an update from Jul 2021 for those who plan to hike there.
